Entitlement to Free School Meals
Your child may be entitled to free school meals if you get any of the following:
- Income Support
- income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
- Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Universal Credit - your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)
Your child may also get free school meals if you get any of these benefits and your child is both:
- younger than the compulsory age for starting school
- in full-time education
If you do not qualify for most benefits (also known as having ‘no recourse to public funds’), your child may still be eligible for free school meals. Speak to the school office to find out whether they’re eligible.
Even if your child receives free school meals (FSM) through Universal Infant Free School Meals (Years R, 1, or 2), applying for benefits-related FSM is crucial. It ensures the school receives extra "Pupil Premium" funding (up to £1,480 per child) to support learning, and secures your eligibility for benefits during holidays.
Key Reasons to Apply Now:
- Extra Funding (Pupil Premium): Applying allows schools to access valuable funding for resources, teaching staff, and activities, even if your child gets free meals automatically.
- Holiday Support: Being officially registered often provides access to the Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF), which offers free food and activities during school holidays.
- Automatic Enrolment: If you are in Year R, 1, or 2, you are already covered, but submitting an application verifies eligibility for this additional funding.
If you meet any of the requirements above, you must apply for Free Schools Meals at: https://www.cloudforedu.org.uk/ofsm/medway/
